Biosecurity for Poultry Owners

Biosecurity refers to the preventative steps taken to reduce the risk of infectious disease transmission in animal populations. Whether you manage a large poultry operation or keep a small backyard flock, practicing strong biosecurity is essential to protect your birds. The Arkansas Department of Agriculture encourages all poultry owners to implement the following on their operations:

Clean

  • Wash hands before and after handling birds
  • Clean or change shoes before entering flock areas
  • Disinfect equipment and tools
  • Remember: the virus can survive for weeks in manure, especially in cool, damp conditions

Cover

  • Prevent contact with wild birds using enclosed, covered coops
  • Use wire mesh or netting on all sides
  • Regularly inspect for holes or tears that could allow entry of birds or rodents

Isolate

  • Quarantine new birds for at least 14 days
  • Keep a logbook of all visitors to your property
  • Restrict access for anyone who’s had contact with wild birds, pet birds, or other flocks
  • Consider using bird deterrents near poultry housing
