Resources For Dam Owners

Dam owners play a critical role in ensuring public safety and protecting property. As the legal owner of a dam, you are responsible for maintaining the structure in a safe condition. Failure to do so could result in liability for damages or even loss of life.

To support responsible dam ownership, the Arkansas Department of Agriculture provides a variety of resources, including educational tools, required forms, and helpful publications.

Dam Owner Academy

Developed by the Association of State Dam Safety Officials, the Dam Owner Academy offers free, easy-to-understand videos and materials covering key aspects of dam ownership. Topics include:

  • Understanding state and federal regulations
  • Routine operation and maintenance
  • Rehabilitation planning
  • Emergency Action Plans (EAPs)
  • Working with qualified dam engineers

Through continued education, dam owners can:

  • Reduce the risk of dam failure
  • Lower liability
  • Improve dam safety
  • Help protect surrounding communities

Additional resources, including guidance on EAPs, common causes of dam failure, and inspection procedures can be found here: https://damsafety.org/dam-owners
