Out-of-State Occupational Licensure

Arkansas offers an automatic occupational licensure pathway for qualified individuals who are already licensed or experienced in another state. This process is designed to help professionals relocate to Arkansas and continue working in their occupation with minimal delay.

Who May Qualify

You may be eligible for an Arkansas occupational license if all of the following apply:

  • You do not have a disqualifying criminal offense under Arkansas law
  • You do not have a pending complaint, allegation, or investigation related to your occupational practice

And one of the following applies:

  • You have held a current, active license in good standing for at least one year in another U.S. state, territory, or district with a similar scope of practice, or
  • Your occupation was not licensed in another state, but is licensed in Arkansas, and you have at least three years of work experience in that occupation

What Automatic Licensure Means

If you qualify, the licensing entity will grant you an Arkansas occupational license without requiring you to repeat education, training, or experience requirements already met in another state.

Requirements

Even if you qualify for automatic licensure, you must meet all standard requirements required of Arkansas licensees, including:

  • Criminal background check (if required for the license)
  • Any applicable fees
  • Continuing education requirements
  • License renewal requirements

State-Specific Requirements

Depending on the occupation, the licensing entity may require:

  • An examination focused on Arkansas-specific laws or rules related to the profession
  • Proof of a bond, insurance coverage, or financial responsibility, if required by state law

In some cases, the licensing entity may waive the Arkansas-specific exam if it determines that:

  • Your education, training, and experience are a sufficient substitute, and
  • Granting the waiver will not compromise public health, safety, or welfare

How to Apply

Applicants should submit an application through the appropriate occupational licensing entity. Required documentation may include proof of licensure, employment history, and background check authorization.
